The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You’ll also quickly spot the distractions that can, so easily, lead you astray.

The Transition ReportTransition words are the road signs in writing—they help your reader move smoothly between ideas. Transitions like “similarly”, “nevertheless”, “in order to”, or “as a result” help you show your readers how separate points go together to support your larger idea. They illustrate agreement, contrast or show cause and effect. One in every four sentences (25%) should contain a transition. If your transition score is less than 25%, you should consider adding more road signs.

In todays fast paced business you need definable processes, systems and procedures for conducting every aspect of the business from first contact through final invoice. But, what really is the secret to a successful repeatable process for your business? Big businesses satisfy this need by purchasing enterprise software solutions tailored to their specific need by such companies as SAP, Oracle, Sage, Microsoft and others and through layers of management to operate the software. Such systems are too expensive and complicated to be practicable for use by small business. Expensive not only because of the cost of the software but expensive because of the manpower and expertise necessary to implement them. Single function “Apps” generally are too narrow for anything but the simplest tasks. The average small business owner utilizes up to 13 disparate software or apps to manage their business along with yellow pads and sticky notes and reliance on theirs and their employee’s memories. These solutions are cumbersome and ineffective and leaves the business owner continually searching for a better solution. Many businesses try to use a mass market accounting software to run their business. While this may work great for accounting, it typically is not a great or even a good tool for creating proposals, managing inventory, scheduling, project management etc. Too simplistic for the trades-based small business with many moving parts. So what does a small business owner do? First Things First You must put the time into understanding how your business works, ie: what is your work flow. I wrote an article recently discussing this topic with an offer to provide a free document to help you think this out. Map out your process. Write down everything that is supposed to happen from the time you start to look for prospects through the sales process through the delivery of your product or service right through to the time you've completed the job and you are asking for referrals. I know it may sound like a lot of work. But, it's worth it. Put in the time it will pay you back ten fold. Now perform a SWOT analysis on your processes. SWAT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Where are processes going well? Where do they need to improve? What changes could be made that would provide significant differences to your customer's experience or your bottom line? What is the single biggest problem in your processes and procedures? Prioritize Your Processes Prioritize your processes by the ones that are most important to your business to the least important ones. For instance, following up with a prospect after sending them a proposal is probably way more important than arranging the warehouse. Nothing happens until something's sold, right? Some processes are put in place because they made sense when you first started your business but maybe they no longer provide any benefit. Question why things are done the way they are and look at them from a new perspective of how does this impact my customer, my employees and/or my bottom line revenue? It's A Team Sport Buy-in is extremely important regardless of the size of your business. Make sure the lines of communications are open. Your technicians, installers, programmers, office personnel, salespeople, etc. are on the front lines of your business. Many times they are very aware of issues that are impeding your success. Ask them. But, be prepared for the criticism. It's OK, in fact it is great! Foster a culture of reflection and suggestion for the greater good of the company and your team will help you grow your company . Side benefit to this behavior is it also fosters less turn over in employees if they are listened to and appreciated. Ready, Set, Go!
