Latest Steam Turbine Offerings Enhance Plant Performance

Mitsubishi: By incorporating the latest blading design and advances in materials, MHI provides complete replacement internals to fit within the existing cylinders of many different types of steam turbines. The replacement rotating and stationary blading, along with advanced design stationary components and sealing technology, result in improved efficiency and therefore increased electrical output at currently operating steam flows.

This results in lower fuel cost and additional megawatts without increasing emissions. These features were developed to make Mitsubishi more competitive in the new steam turbine market.

Among others, the latest design improvements include reduced clearances at shaft packing with Guardian Post and Vortex Shedder technology.

Steam Turbine Improvements

Noteworthy are new approaches to shaping the steam paths with three-dimensional modeling and the use of twisted, leaned and curved vanes and blades in both the low-pressure and high- and intermediate-pressure sections.

a decrease in the profile and end losses in the stages due to the use of new profiles and more attention to meridional profiling of the steam path.

Further, new blade profiles are much more unique than the one shown in the article and give much greater effect.

Exergy intensity and environmental consequences of the medical face masks curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic: Malign bodyguard? - ScienceDirect

Based on the results obtained, in 2020, medical face masks production using fossil-based plastics causes the loss of 2.03 × 103 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs); 1.63 × 108 PDF*m2*yr damage to ecosystem quality; the climate-damaging release of 2.13 × 109 kg CO2eq; and 5.65 × 1010 MJ damage to resources. Besides, annual medical face mask production results in 5.88 × 104 TJ demand for exergy. On the other hand, if used makes are not appropriately handled, they can lead to 4.99 × 105 Pt/yr additional damage to the environment in 2020 as determined by the EDIP 2003.

Environmental challenges induced by extensive use of face masks during COVID-19: A review and potential solutions - ScienceDirect

most of these masks contain plastics or other derivatives of plastics.

generates million tons of plastic wastes to the environments in a short span of time.

A study by Klemeš et al., 2020a,b shows that a mask production consumes about 10-30 Wh energy and releases 59 g CO2-eq greenhouse gas to the environment.

Frontiers | Effect of Face Masks on Interpersonal Communication During the COVID-19 Pandemic | Public Health

Face masks, particularly, muffle sounds and cover facial expressions that ease comprehension during live communication

the face mask poses challenges on daily face-to-face communications.

Proper application of the protective mask involves covering the mouth and the nose, which muffles sound and makes it challenging to understand speech and some higher-pitched voices

Cost of masks and tests deepens a pandemic wedge between the haves and the have-nots

For some, the added financial burden is an irritation — but still affordable. To others, the prospect of paying $1 for a single disposable mask or $24 for a test kit is an economic impossibility, raising the specter that the pandemic will continue to exacerbate inequalities.

Americans have found that the financial costs of the pandemic are increasingly falling on their shoulders.

“These are the workers facing the virus, and we are asking them to buy high-quality masks and pay for rapid tests?” Schneider said. “For many of these workers, it’s just not a possibility — this is about food on the table. And when you face that impossible choice, the devolution of pandemic prevention to impoverished workers is really unrealistic.”
