Australian mothers' participation in employment | Australian Institute of Family Studies

In 2009-10, almost two-thirds of Australian mothers of children aged under 15 years were employed

Mothers were assigned to one of three categories according to the percentage of time they spent working: (a) employed for little/none of the year (0-9% of the year); (b) employed for part of the year (10-89%); or (c) employed for most/all of the year (90-100%). Mothers employed for part of the year include those with intermittent or casual employment, but also includes those who left or started employment part way through the year. This latter group with part-year employment was quite small and could not be disaggregated further

Feeling Pressure to Be a Perfect Mother Relates to Parental Burnout and Career Ambitions - PMC

‘intensive mothering’ norms prescribes mothers to be the main one responsible to take care of the children and to be fully devoted to this task, putting the children’s needs before her own

Research has shown that women’s feelings of being pressured to be a perfect mother are related to increased maternal guilt, lower self-efficacy beliefs, and higher stress levels

August Bebel. Woman and Socialism 1879

The husband is liable for his wife’s debts.

For, in case of divorce, the joint earnings of husband and wife belong to the husband, even if he is the guilty party, and if most of their common property has been earned by the wife.

A divorced woman has no right to represent her children legally, or to control their property, even if the children have been awarded to her, while the father continues to enjoy full parental rights.

Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) and his play A Doll’s House (1879) | Towards Emancipation?

Torvald would be affectionate to Nora, but by referring to her his little “lark” and “squirrel” while simultaneously chastising her for spending too much on Christmas gifts or eating macaroons. To Torvald, Nora was always his “little” something, seemingly symbolizing both his possession of her and his view of her as less than a full human being.
