Toyota's July global vehicle output drops again, puts annual target in doubt | Reuters
Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) said on Tuesday its July global vehicle production had fallen 8.6% year-on-year, missing its target for the fourth straight month, as COVID outbreaks, severe weather and a recall probe on top of a persistent chip shortage hurt output.
The sustained weakness in overall performance in Julyfrom the world's largest automaker by sales has raised concerns that Toyota may have to lower its annual production target of 9.7 million vehicles, even as China dials back pandemic restrictions and chip shortages are showing some signs of easing.
Toyota has also been dealing with heavy rain in Japan, a production line halt due to a recall investigation, and coronavirus outbreaks at a local plant.

Will the CHIPs Act Impact 200mm Fabs? - 3D InCites
Over the past few years, the availability of 200mm process equipment has become extremely tight. In a discussion on the floor with Emerald Greig, Sr. Vice President of Business Development for PTW Group, she estimated that there were probably less than 100 200mm tools available on the market and that the condition of those tools was questionable. What this means is that the new 200mm fabs coming online will probably have to purchase new equipment to bring these fabs online. Why this is important is that with new equipment these fabs are probably costing around 2-3 billion dollars; roughly a billion for the building and the rest for equipment. If the fab was able to procure used equipment the cost would drop considerably, to about $500,000 or less for the equipment.
Since the deprecation of the equipment and building will impact the final cost of the chip, it’s safe to say that fabs producing chips on 200mm wafers using new equipment will need to be charging more for those chips than a legacy fab with no depreciation costs. This may have a significant impact on those new fabs, as the chip shortage eases, these fabs will likely need to reduce chip prices below costs. Typically, this means companies running at a loss, and if it goes on long enough getting acquired, or going out of business.

[Focus] Hyundai and Kia electric car damage realization... The impact of the US Senate's 'inflation reduction bill'
However, only cars made in the United States are eligible for the tax credit. In addition, the use of electric vehicle batteries made in China must be quickly stopped. U.S. automakers such as GM and Ford lobbied Congress extensively to remove the China-related provisions, but lawmakers rejected the request.
If the law goes into effect, there are concerns that Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, which do not yet produce electric vehicles in the United States, could be hit. Starting next year , in order to receive support from the U.S. government, batteries made in North America must be used, and only electric vehicles produced in North America can receive a subsidy of $7,500 per vehicle in the form of a tax credit . Some House Dems Threaten Possible Manchin-Approved Spending Plan
The nascent imbroglio deals with the rollback of a $10,000 cap on state and local taxes that taxpayers are able to deduct from their federal bill, known as SALT. Taxpayers used to have unlimited deductions before the new cap was established in the 2017 Republican tax law.
The House-approved Build Back Better bill that later died in the Senate raised the deduction limit to $80,000, a measure with outsized benefits to richer taxpayers. As negotiations to revive a slimmer spending bill with Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia appear to gain steam, some House Democrats want to ensure that it's included."As I've consistently said, If there are any changes to the tax code that affect families in my district, then restoring SALT must be part of it. No SALT, no dice," Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey said in a statement first reported by Punchbowl News.

Wafer foundry expansion begins to slow down, knock-on effects hit semiconductor equipment
Semiconductor equipment manufacturers said that due to the lack of improvement in the delivery time of equipment and machines, and the recent market situation has changed too quickly, TSMC has slightly adjusted the expansion schedule. The overseas expansion is still implemented according to the established schedule and progress, but the pace of domestic expansion slightly slower.
Although the delivery time of equipment and machines is as long as 12 to 18 months, or even 24 months to deliver orders, many The factory's voluntary or involuntary plans are still ongoing, so that the market's doubts about overcapacity after 2023 have not subsided
With the recent rapid and rapid demand reversal, the semiconductor supply chain was completely unable to respond, and high inventory and low demand quickly detonated order cutting and price wars. Recently, it has finally begun to spread to upstream wafer foundries.

Press Center | TrendForce - Market research, price trend of DRAM, NAND Flash, LEDs, TFT-LCD and green energy, PV
According to TrendForce data, global wafer foundry capacity will increase by approximately 14% annually in 2022. Since expanding 8-inch capacity is not cost-effective and its growth rate is much lower than the overall industry average, 8-inch capacity will grow approximately 6% annually, while 12-inch capacity will grow 18% annually. Of this new capacity, approximately 65% of new 12-inch capacity will be in mature processes (28nm and above) with an annual growth rate of 20%
due to the relatively conservative expansion process of IDMs’ own factories in recent years, capacity shortages have been commonplace and IDMs have also successively outsourced products to foundries. HHGrace's power discrete revenue scale in 2021 was the greatest in the pure-play foundry field with the steady release of new 12-inch capacity in Wuxi to perpetuate revenue performance. PSMC and Vanguard have also recently increased their 8-inch capacity to undertake related orders.
The plan is to migrate these PMICs to the 90/55nm nodes, focusing on applications such as smartphones and servers. TSMC, UMC, PSMC, HHGrace, and SMIC, all have such plans.
